Austin became a part of First Coast News in January 2016, where he assumed roles as both an anchor and reporter. At present, he serves as the anchor for the evening newscasts. During his elementary school years, Austin’s music teacher selected him to portray a news anchor in a school play, noting his resemblance to NBC’s Bryant Gumbel, and this marked the beginning of his journey in journalism.
He earned his degree from the University of North Texas, majoring in Broadcast Journalism and minoring in Social Science. Before his tenure at First Coast News, Austin spent almost six years as an anchor and reporter at the CBS affiliate in his hometown, Tyler. During this time, he advanced from a weekend anchor to a 5 p.m. news anchor. Subsequently, he ventured to Florida after serving as the primary anchor at Time Warner Cable News in Raleigh, North Carolina, for two years.
One of Austin’s most notable assignments was his visit to Iraq, where he spent a week with soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas, documenting their experiences and contributions to the United States. He continued to share their stories with Texas viewers as they returned home to their families. Beyond his professional pursuits, Austin has a deep appreciation for good food and companionship, often exploring Jacksonville’s restaurants and enjoying the beautiful local beaches during his free time.
