Gardner is the main anchor for WLKY’s weekend evening newscasts, a position he took on in September 2019. He initially joined WLKY News as a reporter and occasional anchor, bringing over ten years of television news experience with him. Before his time at WLKY, Gardner had worked in Kentucky before, spending two years as a reporter in Evansville, where he frequently crossed the Ohio River to cover news in Western Kentucky. During this period, Gardner was recognized for his exceptional community service and was honored as a Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Steve Beshear.
Before his time at WLKY, Gardner spent five years at ABC57 News in South Bend, IN. He started as the weekday morning anchor and later played a role in launching the station’s first investigative unit. During his time in South Bend, Gardner reported live from significant events, including the end of the Chicago Cubs’ 108-year World Series championship drought, as well as the total solar eclipse that swept across the entire United States in August 2017. He also extensively covered South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s campaign for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
In 2015, Gardner’s work earned him a nomination for a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award for his field anchoring coverage of the Super Bowl Sunday blizzard, which left much of the Upper Midwest buried under more than a foot of snow. Gardner’s broadcasting career began at KNDO-TV, the NBC affiliate in Yakima, Washington, where he worked as a one-man-band reporter. During his time at Columbia, Gardner interned at ABC7 Chicago and the consumer unit of Chicago’s CBS affiliate, WBBM. When Gardner is not reporting or volunteering, he enjoys exploring Louisville and savoring the city’s diverse culinary offerings.
