In the late 1890s. Copeland’s great-grandparents relocated to Tacoma. In 1966, his parents bought five acres in Gig Harbor, and built the house where he was raised with his brother and sister. He embarked off to WSU in Pullman to pursue a career in broadcasting, after graduating from Peninsula High School in 1990.
He moved to Northwest Cable News in September 1996. Copeland covered stories in Boise for one year, and another two years working in Portland, before moving to the Seattle area to report and anchor on the weekends.
Copeland started co-anchoring the weekday mornings on NWCN with Cam Johnson; that lasted 8 years. Finally, KING 5 allowed me to anchor the News at Noon, and from there, he worked in a variety of roles over the past 10 years.
During his free time, he works on things like building, fixing, and learning. A good day often involves a chainsaw or other power tools. Copeland is blessed with two beautiful daughters who mean the world to me, and he is always trying to find more time to spend with them before they grow up too fast.

DuPont-Columbia Award, one of journalism’s highest honors.
KING 5 was awarded the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in 2015 and was again recognized in 2017 with yet another national Murrow for its continuing coverage of the Hanford nuclear facility. In 2018, KING 5 won three national Edward R. Murrow Awards for feature reporting, excellence in video, and large market TV website.
