Jeremy Finley Career
Finley specializes in investigations into political corruption, criminal activity, and waste of taxpayer money. His investigations have resulted in multiple criminal charges and guilty pleas, TBI and district attorney investigations, new state laws, the resignation of one of the highest-paid elected officials in Nashville, a $1 million payout to the victims of a nationwide company scamming the sick and uninsured, and the discovery of missing girls.
The Nashville Scene wrote that Jeremy is “no stranger to blockbuster exposes.” Notably, Finley was the first to expose the “unintended acceleration” in Toyota vehicles, which ultimately led to one of the largest recalls of automobiles in the nation’s history and Congressional hearings in which his investigations were included.
Moreover, Finley’s investigations into elected officials prompted the Nashville Post to call him a watchdog for exposing corrupt politicians. Following his exposure of an elected official lounging in his bathrobe while claiming to be a meeting, the Nashville Scene called the story, “a devastatingly effective expose … a piece that has already become part of Nashville’s political folklore.”
Also, his undercover work has repeatedly exposed thieves and scam artists in action, resulting in guilty pleas. For instance, he and a WSMV4 photojournalist found runaway girls hiding in the home of a man accused of squatting in a foreclosed home. As a result, the girls were then located by police and the man pleaded guilty to harboring runaways.
Furthermore, Finley is an internationally published novelist. Notably, his debut novel, “The Darkest Time of Night,” was hailed as one of the best books of the summer by People magazine and the New York Post in 2018. “The Dark Above,” received rave reviews from NPR and the Library Journal and Finley is busy at work on his third novel.
Jeremy Finley Awards
Finley has twice received the IRE award, one of the highest honors in investigative journalism. Also, he received honors from Investigative Reporters and Editors for his stories exposing mistakes made by government agencies during the historic flood that swamped downtown Nashville, and for his contributions to the WSMV4 investigations that exposed the corruption in former Judge Casey Moreland’s courts. On top of that, he has been named as a finalist for the IRE award three times, received a national Emmy nomination for investigative reporting, and won a national Headliner award in 2018.
In addition, Finley received twenty Midsouth Emmys, four Edward R. Murrow awards, and multiple first-place honors from the Associated Press. He was named the Journalist of the Year in 2016 by the AP as well as named the best large market TV reporter in Tennessee in 2013. While Finley is most proud of his investigations, he admits his favorite assignment was covering the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, for WSMV4 and the other stations owned by the Meredith Corporation.
Jeremy Finley WSMV-TV
WSMV-TV, also known as Channel 4 is a television station in Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States. It is affiliated with NBC and is owned by Gray Television alongside low-power Telemundo affiliate WTNX-LD or channel 15. Both stations share studios on Knob Road in west Nashville, where WSMV-TV’s transmitter is also located. Channel 4 signed on the air as WSM-TV on September 30, 1950, at 1:10 p.m. CT. Notably, it was the first television station in Nashville and the second in Tennessee, behind fellow NBC affiliate WMCT in Memphis. Consequently, WMCT was forced to switch to channel 5 to avoid co-channel interference.
Channel 4 has been an NBC affiliate from its sign-on, although it carried some programming from CBS, DuMont, and ABC. Also, its secondary affiliation with CBS ended in 1953, when WSIX-TV or channel 8, now WKRN-TV on channel 2 signed on as a primary CBS affiliate. WSM-TV shared ABC programming with WSIX-TV for a year until WLAC-TV or channel 5, WTVF signed on in 1954 as the market’s new primary CBS affiliate. As a result, WSIX-TV was left to take the ABC affiliation.
WSMV-TV broadcasts 53 hours of locally produced newscasts each week; with nine hours each weekday and four hours each on Saturdays and Sundays. In regards to the number of hours devoted to news programming, it is the highest local newscast output among all broadcast television stations in the Nashville market. Its news department was the first in the United States to receive satellite photographs when it first used them in 1964. During the mid-1970s, the station developed a strong news division that, in the 1980s through the 1990s, won numerous regional and national awards for in-depth and investigative reporting.
