Sopel came to BBC as a reporter and producer on BBC Radio Solent in 1983. Since then, he has garnered national acclaim for his extensive reporting on UK politics. He was named political journalist of the year by the Public Affairs Industry in 2007. In addition, Sopel worked as a chief political correspondent for BBC News before spending four years as the BBC’s Paris correspondent. Moreover, he became the main presenter on The Politics Show on BBC One in 2005 where he interviewed the most senior political figures in the UK and abroad.
Sopel worked as a freelance writer and broadcaster prior to joining the BBC in 1983 as a reporter and producer for BBC Radio Solent. He proceeded to become the chief political correspondent for BBC News 24. Later, he spent three years as the BBC’s Paris correspondent. Furthermore, he covered many stories in Paris which included the French ban on the importation of British beef, the millennium celebrations in Paris, the oil spill in Brittany, the French presidency of the EU in 2000, and the Concorde crash in July 2000.
