Kevin Janison Career
Before joining Southern Nevada, Janison worked in Reno; Madison, WI; Evansville, IN; Jackson, MS, and New York City. He moved to Las Vegas in 1994 and joined the 13 Action News weather team in the summer of 2022. His weather forecasts have dealt with all the curve balls thrown in Southern Nevada: 100-year floods to drought. From 8 inches of snow in Henderson, to 117 degrees at the airport. From spring winds that have gusted over 90 mph in some neighborhoods to rare fog in the desert. Also, there have been small tornadoes, microbursts, hail, and late-night lightning assaults.
In addition, Janison built the Neighborhood Weather Network, which placed weather stations and provided a curriculum in meteorology in over 100 schools throughout the region. He visits approximately 100 schools, giving presentations on weather, being an author along with the importance of reading/literacy, reading, and speaking at graduations and DARE culminations each year. Moreover, he has volunteered his time to numerous charities and community organizations since he joined Clark County.
Furthermore, Janison was named National Broadcaster of the Year in 2006 by the National Weather Association. Notably, this honor was bestowed based on his on-air work, building and administrating the weather station network, and service to the community. The honor is very prestigious since every TV meteorologist/weathercaster in the country is eligible.
Also, Janison received his seventh Emmy award from the Southwest Region of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences in June 2021. He has won a “Best Weathercast” award from the Associated Press, “Best On-Air Personality” and six “Best Weathercaster” awards from Las Vegas’ Electronic Media Awards, plus several mentions in the Review Journal’s “Best of Las Vegas” annual edition.
Kevin Janison KTNV-TV
KTNV-TV, also known as Channel 13 is a television station in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States. It is affiliated with ABC and owned by the E. W. Scripps Company alongside Laughlin-licensed Ion Television owned-and-operated station KMCC (channel 34). The station’s studios are located on South Valley View Boulevard in the nearby unincorporated community of Paradise and its transmitter is located atop Mount Arden in Henderson.
The station was the third to be activated in Southern Nevada, beginning broadcasting in May 1956 as KSHO-TV. At first, it operated on a 24-hour basis, unique for the time, with a rotating schedule of movies and minimal news coverage; it remained an independent station until affiliating with ABC in December 1957. Due to financial constraints, multiple stock sales and ownership transfers occurred from 1957 until 1961, when the licensee, Television Company of America, declared bankruptcy and a receiver was appointed. The Federal Communications Commission opened an investigation into an unauthorized transfer of control of the station in 1963, which resulted in a decision to deny the renewal of its broadcast license.
In 1979, the Journal Company acquired KSHO-TV and relaunched it as KTNV-TV in March 1980. The company made technical investments at the station, and the news department also grew. However, KTNV-TV has not been able to rise substantially from third place in the market despite several overhauls and tweaks to its newscasts. In 2015, Scripps acquired Journal, including KTNV.
