Black made his debut in the world of cinema with a role in Kevin Costner’s film, The War when he was 11 years old. Following that, he took on the character of Caleb Temple in the CBS television series American Gothic, which aired from 1995 to 1996. His presence was also felt in notable films such as Sling Blade, Ghosts of Mississippi, and The X-Files. Black later took on the role of Conner Strong in the TV film Flash (1997), featured on The Wonderful World of Disney. In this movie, his character devotedly visits a horse daily, aspiring to purchase it.
His career continued with a supporting role as Oakley in the historical drama Cold Mountain (2003). In 2004, Black played the role of Vernon, an autistic piano prodigy, in the independent musical drama Killer Diller, and portrayed Mike Winchell in the football-themed drama Friday Night Lights (2004), directed by Peter Berg. Black’s involvement extended to various projects, including his portrayal of Nat Banyon in the indie thriller film Deepwater (2005) by David S. Marfield, Chris Kruger in the Gulf War-themed drama film Jarhead (2005) directed by Sam Mendes, and Sean Boswell in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) directed by Justin Lin, which he described as his most enjoyable experience.

Further roles included Buddy in the indie drama Get Low (2009) directed by Aaron Schneider, Jeep Hanson in the Bible-themed fantasy thriller Legion (2010), and Luke Chisholm in the indie golfing film Seven Days in Utopia (2010), portraying a talented young golfer aspiring for the pro tour. In the drama film 42 (2013), Black depicted the Brooklyn Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese. Reflecting on his experience, he found filming more enjoyable as it allowed him to reminisce about his sports-playing days and experience camaraderie with fellow actors.
His television journey took a turn in 2014 when he joined NCIS: New Orleans as NCIS Special Agent LaSalle, known for his “work hard, play hard” motto. Despite his busy schedule, Black made a cameo appearance as Sean Boswell in Furious 7 in 2015. However, due to his commitments to NCIS: New Orleans, he couldn’t reprise the role in The Fate of the Furious, as explained on The Chris Mannix Show in July 2016. In November 2019, Black decided to depart from NCIS: New Orleans to allocate more time to his family. Despite this decision, he returned to the Fast & Furious franchise, reprising his role as Sean in F9 in 2021.
