Pensgen started her skating journey at the age of six after being inspired by watching figure skating on television. From 1998 onwards, her primary coach at the Onyx in Rochester was Richard Callaghan. Additionally, Mitch Moyer provided coaching at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where Pensgen represented the Genesee Figure Skating Club.

During the 2001–02 season, Pensgen received coaching from Callaghan and Sergei Petrovsky in Michigan. Subsequently, in 2003, her training shifted to Diana Ronayne in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Pensgen also ventured into pair skating, initially partnering with her brother, Nathan Pensgen. Later, in 2002, she joined forces with Derek Trent, earning a 14th-place finish at the 2003 U.S. Championships.
